Does removing tarnish off of silver with toothpaste damage the silver object AT ALL? I have a sterling silver ring which I am very fond of that I got from Mexico while on a mission trip, and whenever the tarnish appears (usually every 6-8 months) I%26#039;ve been rubbing flouride toothpaste on it, and the tarnish instantly disappears.
However, does the toothpaste damage the ring at all? I can%26#039;t see any visible damage (I had the ring since August of 2005 and have been polishing it with toothpaste since 2006) on the ring itself, but I was wondering whether it would get damaged at all, whether in a few days, weeks, months, or in the long run.
Removing tarnish off of silver with toothpaste??
Although it does not seem so, toothpaste contains a very fine abrasive. As is the case with any abrasive polish, using toothpaste to polish silver will rub very small quantities of silver off of the surface of the silver. In fact, the tarnish itself is partly composed of silver. Removing the tarnish does remove that part of the silver. You might consider this an alternate method of cleaning such as:
