Sensodyne toothpaste?

Following a recent trip to the dentist it was found that I had a slightly receding gumline on the side of my gob. The dentist recommended a toothpaste for sensitive teeth which I duly went out and bought. I%26#039;ve been using it for a few weeks (as has my husband), but noticed my teeth getting more sensitive rather than less. My husband then told me the other day that his teeth were getting more sensitive with the toothpaste as well. Anyone else had this problem?

Sensodyne toothpaste?
You said you went to the dentist and he recommended a toothpaste for sensitive teeth when what you only had was receeding gums. You didn%26#039;t need the Sensodyne unless your gums started out being sensitive. So stop using it and see if there is a change.

Sometimes things are just fine till a complaint is made and then everyone has the same complaint. So I don%26#039;t know if the problem is catchy or the thought is catchy. So try changing toothpastes.
Reply:No, I have used the toothpaste and had a different reaction to it.
Reply:i haven%26#039;t had this problem, but i hope you find a solution :)
Reply:No, I%26#039;ve used it for years, and my teeth used to be very sensitive, it will work, I promise, it just takes time!
Reply:Yeah, actually it is made to make teeth less sensitive, but yeah, i got that problem too, they get more sensitive. =(
Reply:use bicarcobanate soda
Reply:No. I%26#039;ve always heard that the toothbrush matters a whole lot more than the toothpaste.
Reply:That is kind of strange. I suffer from sensitive teeth and use anti-sensitivity toothpaste. Sensodyne is one of them. There are some new ones out now. I just bought the new one from Crest and really love it alot. The taste is far better for me and it works well. You might just try another brand.
Reply:No I tried it on dentist say so and found it didnt suit me at all I was getting an upset stomache and the doc thinks it was that.

I am using Superdrugs own brand at the moment of the same thing and that is fine and my sensitivity has gone down a lot.
Reply:We use Crest Pro Health toothpaste and it seems to be working for us. I haven%26#039;t ever used Sensodyne but it could be as simple as just switching toothpaste.
Reply:After a few weeks, you should be noticing a difference. You could try a different toothpaste. Crest also makes a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. I would give it a month. If it is still bothering you, return to your dentist. There is a clear coating that can be brushed on to the area of recession (sorta like nail polish). It usually lasts a couple months before wearing off. Dentists usually recommend the toothpaste first since it is much more inexpensive.
Reply:I have used Sensodyne for many years and am very happy with it BUT I did start using it with a sonic toothbrush, so whether it is the toothbrush or the more rigorous dental hygiene routine I now follow I would not like to say. But to date i have not had a re-occurrence of the same sort of problem you mention. Keep smiling!
Reply:I have to say I have had the complete opposite! If I stop using the toothpaste I cannot eat or drink anything which is anything but lukewarm.

How hard are you brushing your teeth? sensitive teeth can be caused or worssened by scrubbing too hard ad the gums receed from being brushed too hard and thus the nerves are more exposed and you get sensitive teeth. Have you recently bought an electric tooth brush as this can be the culpret of the abouve scrubbing thing.

Go back, ask your dentist and checkout whats going on as I have never heard of a bad case of sensodyne toothpaste, like ever and I have known many people to take it.

Also try switching brands to get a better senetive toothpaste, I have never tried it but have heard boots own brand is supposed to be quite good?
Reply:My husband has used it for years with no problems.

Reply:I was a dental nurse for 7 years, and one of the dentists that I worked with had done a study on different toothpastes when she was at Uni. She discovered that Sensodyne was one of the most abraisive toothpastes out there! Which makes the sensitivity worse, especially if you stop using it. What she recommended was that people with sensitive teeth used a normal toothpaste, but then put a little sensitive toothpaste on the sensitive area like a cream, and leave it on overnight. The way sensitive toothpastes work is they contain a mineral salt that blocks the tiny pores in the tooth surface. After a while you may need to switch to another brand of sensitive toothpaste that contains a different mineral salt (they all contain different ones). As after a while it will stop having the same effect. All the dentists I worked with after her, also gave this advice.

Also, there are a couple of reasons why your gums have receded. It can be because you have been brushing too hard so try using a softer brush and always brush in a circular motion. The other reason is if you don%26#039;t brush well enough and the gum shrinks away from any plaque/tartar/bacteria on your teeth so make sure you brush thoroughly and floss :)

Hope that helps :)
Reply:hmmm i used sensodyne and it really helped my problem..but i think it takes a few weeks to build up the sensitivity barrier that sensodyne does.... give it time ..it does work..... maybe its the way you are brushing your teeth too?? lots of people dont brush properly and dont even realize it.. i was one of them.... thank god i ve still never had a cavity but it has worn out some of the enamel on my teeth... anyhow talk to your dentist about that as well.... good luck...
