Putting toothpaste on mosquito bites works?

I had heard somewhere that if you put toothpaste on a mosquito bite, then the itch would go away. I got bit pretty bad by several and they were driving me insane while I was at a bonfire. I went crazy and decided to try it because they didnt have any cream. I put it on and it worked. The itch went away! It was amazing! NOW....How is this possibe? Is there something on the toothpaste that would help do that?

Yes it is the mint..if you use tea tree oil or camphor or mint it does the same...if you take citronella oil and make a spray with water you wont even get bites..
